Will Germany’s Future Renewable Energy Supply Be Secured by Green Hydrogen?
A recent survey by the German Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (DWV) stated Germany could deliver almost 28GW of green hydrogen electrolyser capacity by 2030. Hydrogen Industry Leaders gives a snapshot of how green hydrogen could secure a decisive part of Germany’s future renewable energy supply.

 

DWV surveyed its members to determine the potential supply capacities for electrolysers for green hydrogen production by 2030. It comes after Germany has set a goal of achieving an actual electrolysis capacity of 10GW by 2030.

 

According to the companies, it is possible that in 2025 there could be a maximum supply capacity of 16.25GW a year, and by 2030 it will be 27.8GW.

 

The companies that took part in the survey are Elogen, ITM Power/Linde, MAN Energy Solutions/H-TEC Systems, McPhy Energy Deutschland, Siemens Energy, Sunfire, and Thyssenkrupp Nucera.

 

“The result of the DWV market survey shows the assumption can be exceeded,” the trade group said.

 

It added that analysis of the survey results indicates a turnover of €13.1bn in 2030, resulting in the creation of approximately 65,800 jobs.

 

This forecast is supported by the current rise in natural gas prices. According to DWV, the recent price explosion against the background of the Ukraine war has led to a “more than competitive price level of green hydrogen” compared to its fossil counterpart.

 

DWV chief executive Werner Diwald said: “The facts are clear: Green hydrogen could secure a decisive part of Germany’s future renewable energy supply much faster and in significantly larger quantities than previously assumed by politicians.”
