JV Between BPCL & Sembcorp for Green Hydrogen in India Confirmed

Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) has revealed that Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India, a fully owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries, will establish a 50:50 joint venture (JV) with BPCL to create renewable energy and green hydrogen projects across India.

This collaboration aims to advance India’s energy transition and development objectives. 

The partnership will emphasise producing, operating, and marketing renewable energy and green hydrogen, alongside its derivatives.

“The JV will also consider projects in green ammonia production and bunkering, emissions reduction for port operations, and other emerging green fuel technologies,” it stated. 

“The potential projects will leverage Sembcorp’s renewables expertise and BPCL’s capabilities in the petroleum sector and infrastructure.”

With 6 GW of renewable energy assets in India, Sembcorp claims to be well-positioned for large-scale, cost-efficient green hydrogen production.

Commenting on the partnership, G. Krishnakumar, chairman & managing director of BPCL, noted that BPCL’s alliance with Sembcorp signifies a pivotal step towards a sustainable future. 

He explained that BPCL will combine its ambitions, knowledge, and resources with Sembcorp to explore the development of innovative, high-quality renewable energy and green hydrogen solutions, helping achieve India’s climate goals and BPCL’s own net zero emissions target for Scope 1 and 2 by 2040. 

He added that BPCL is determined to create a robust renewable energy portfolio of 10 GW to address future energy demands and become a net zero Energy Company by 2040.

Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) ranks as the second largest Indian oil marketing company (OMC), engaged in refining crude oil and marketing petroleum products, with notable operations in both upstream and downstream segments of the oil and gas sector. 

It has achieved the prestigious ‘Maharatna’ designation, placing it among elite firms with enhanced operational and financial independence. As of 31 December 2024, the Government of India holds a 52.98% stake in BPCL.
