Accelera Sets World Record for Longest Hydrogen Truck Journey

Hydrogen fuel shines as heavy-duty truck sets world record for the longest trip on a single tank for this vehicle type. The truck traveled for 1,806 miles, consuming 168 kilograms of hydrogen. This innovative step is credited to Accelera and their partnership with government entities.

Accelera by Cummins has set a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance traveled by a hydrogen fuel cell electric heavy-duty truck without refuelling.

Heavy duty truck, zero-emission

The hydrogen-powered H2Rescue truck, a Kenworth T370 prototype, completed a 1,806-mile (2,906-km) journey in central California on a single fill, showcasing the potential of zero-emissions hydrogen technology for heavy-duty applications.

Equipped with a 250kW traction motor and powered by Accelera’s fuel cell engine, the H2Rescue consumed 168 kilograms of hydrogen over the journey, producing zero carbon emissions—versus the 664 pounds that would have been emitted by a conventional diesel truck, according to a release.

The trip was monitored by a Guinness World Records adjudicator, confirming a record-breaking demonstration of hydrogen as a feasible fuel for reducing transportation-related pollution.

Government supports a cleaner future

A fuel cell-powered truck of this size can displace around 1,825 gallons of fuel each year and cut greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 2.5 metric tons.

This 33,000-pound Class 7 heavy-duty demonstration vehicle was developed through a collaboration involving Accelera, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the U.S. Department of Defense.

The H2Rescue truck can power Federal Emergency Management Agency trailers and emergency shelters for up to 72 hours without refueling, making it ideal for disaster relief, Accelera added in the release.
