India and UK strengthen cooperation over green hydrogen

India and the UK set the workshop with aims of enhacing safety practises while boosting a green hydrogen partnership.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the British Standards Institution (BSI) have strengthened its India-UK cooperation over green hydrogen standardisation.

It comes after a two-day India-UK Standards Partnership workshop on green hydrogen in New Delhi, hosted by the UK government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). It focused predominantly on green hydrogen production and regulations.

The workshop forms part of the UK’s wider schedule of activity that aims to increase the use of international standards in India to boost growth, attract investment and enhance trade.

Abbey Dorian, Energy Sector Lead at BSI, said that the event served “as a testament to the importance of knowledge exchange, standardisation, and innovation in building a sustainable hydrogen market. India and the UK have a shared ambition to become leaders in green hydrogen, supporting the goal of a net zero future.”

Discussions emphasised the importance of safety, scalability, and the adoption of global hydrogen certification.

The workshop is part of the UK’s wider schedule of activity that aims to increase the use of international standards in India to boost growth, attract investment and enhance trade.

It also strengthens BIS’s efforts under its National Green Hydrogen Mission, which includes the development of at least two green hydrogen hubs.

An outlay of ₹ 400 crore (approximately £37 million) for 2025-26 was tipped for these hubs and other projects.

BSI, is the national standards body of the UK, and offer the “assurance of hydrogen gas safety through direct testing”. The company will be demonstrating at our Hydrogen Industry Leaders safety conference on 13 February, highlighting the regulatory systems around hydrogen.
