Spain releases list of energy firms selected for hydrogen valley projects

Spain has announced a total of 16 projects have been accepted for the hydrogen valley clusters, with €1.6 billion EU funding available from March 2026.

The Spanish government has released its list of energy firms whose projects have been accepted for planned hydrogen valley clusters, with the funds being expected to roll out in March 2026.

Repsol, EDP, Moeve, BP and Iberdroloa are listed among the successful applicants, Spanish news outlet elEconomista reports.

The Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE) has accepted a total of 16 projects, and plans to allocate €1.6 billion via the NextGenEU fund between them.

As stated by the European commission, repayments of EU borrowing allocated to NextGenerationEU will start as of 2028 and will take place over a long-time horizon, until 2058.

Moeve recently announced it had gained “regulatory certainty” over the construction of its flagship green hydrogen project after decrees to extend a windfall tax aimed at energy companies were rejected by Spanish parliament.

According to Cepsa (now formally Moeve) the project which entails over €3bn (£2.5bn) of investment, is set to produce over 300,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.

As previously reported, the country has set aims to replace 25% of the current 500,000 tonnes of fossil-based hydrogen consumed by the Spanish industry annually, with green hydrogen.

  • EDP
  • Hyren Almonte
  • Heidelberg Materials Hispania Cementos
