Yanmar Hydrogen Engine Demonstration Paves Towards Zero-Emission Coastal Shipping
Yanmar Power Technology has marked a significant milestone in sustainable marine technology, announcing a successful land-based demonstration of its 500 KW hydrogen engine designed for coastal vessels.
This breakthrough highlights the company’s commitment to advancing hydrogen as a clean fuel source for maritime applications, pushing forward the vision of zero-emission shipping in Japan.
In a 4-stroke high-speed hydrogen engine using pilot ignition, a mere amount of diesel oil ignites the hydrogen-air premixture. Impressively, the engine achieved “the world’s highest hydrogen fuel ratio,” delivering a powerful output of 500 KW. Yanmar to further optimise this technology by testing biofuel as a pilot ignition fuel, with plans to obtain class certification for broader deployment all over Asian countries by 2026.
The trial is part of the zero-emission ship project, an ambitious programme aiming at developing hydrogen-powered vessels for sustainable shipping as well. Yanmar is exploring options to combine hydrogen engines with battery storage, creating a reliable, clean energy source for coastal shipping operations.
Yanmar’s efforts are supported by a consortium of industry leaders and research institutions, including Uno Transtech, Kyoto University, Fukuoka Shipbuilding, Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding, Mirai Shipbuilding, Japan’s National Maritime Research Institute, and the National Institute of Maritime, Port, and Aviation Technology.
Earlier, Yanmar achieved a 30% hydrogen blend in its 400 KW EP400G gas-fired cogeneration system at Daigas’ Carbon Neutral Research ANNEX Torishima site. This advancement in hydrogen blending technology further underscores Yanmar’s innovative approach to clean energy solutions for a wider range of applications.
Now, Yanmar’s 500 KW hydrogen engine is a significant step forward in Japan’s zero-emission shipping aspirations. By combining advanced hydrogen technology, collaborative industry partnerships, and a clear path to certification, Yanmar and its consortium partners are leading the way in sustainable marine propulsion. The integration of hydrogen engines and electric propulsion systems reflects a promising future for clean energy in maritime transport.
