Woodside Joins Forces with Japan Suiso Energy and KEPCO to Build Liquid Hydrogen Supply Chain

Woodside Energy, a leading Australian oil and gas producer, has announced a strategic partnership with Japan Suiso Energy (JSE) and Kansai Electric Power Co (KEPCO) to develop a pioneering liquid hydrogen supply chain between Australia and Japan. The agreement, formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MoU), marks a major step forward in the global transition to clean energy and hydrogen exports.

Under the partnership, liquid hydrogen produced at Woodside’s proposed H2Perth project in Western Australia will be transported via specialized liquid hydrogen carriers to receiving terminals in Japan, supporting the growing demand for hydrogen as a low-carbon energy solution.

The H2Perth facility, first announced in 2021, represents a commercial-scale, carbon-neutral hydrogen project, with Woodside committing more than A$1 billion (approximately US$660 million) to bring the project to fruition. Initially, the facility is expected to produce up to 100 tonnes of liquid hydrogen per day using natural gas, positioning Australia as a key player in the emerging hydrogen export market.

“This partnership is a significant milestone for Woodside and for the global hydrogen economy,” said a Woodside spokesperson. “By collaborating with Japan Suiso Energy and KEPCO, we are creating a scalable and sustainable liquid hydrogen supply chain that will contribute to decarbonization and support Japan’s clean energy transition.”

The collaboration aligns with international efforts to expand hydrogen infrastructure, enhance energy security, and accelerate the adoption of zero-emission fuels across Asia and beyond. Liquid hydrogen, with its high energy density and suitability for long-distance transport, is poised to play a critical role in global hydrogen trade and the decarbonization of industrial and power sectors.

“This MoU represents a shared vision for a sustainable hydrogen future,” said representatives from Japan Suiso Energy and KEPCO. “Together with Woodside, we are taking a concrete step toward realizing a robust and reliable liquid hydrogen supply chain between Australia and Japan.”

As governments and industries worldwide prioritize hydrogen as a clean energy solution, partnerships like this reinforce the potential of hydrogen exports to drive economic growth, create jobs, and accelerate the global energy transition.
