Up to 80,000 Hydrogen bus Journeys by the end of 2023 in Australia

Two buses powered by hydrogen are preparing to hit the roads in South Australia, with the transportation company estimating the potential for over 80,000 passenger journeys in the coming year. 

These Foton Mobility Hydrogen Fuel Cell Buses (FTH12s) will be operational at the Morphettville depot in Adelaide under Torrens Transit. This addition joins Transit Systems’ existing collection of eco-friendly transit options, which already includes 60 electric buses.

The buses will be fueled by green hydrogen sourced from Hydrogen Park South Australia, a collaborative effort between the South Australia Government and Australian Gas Infrastructure Group. 

This green hydrogen is integrated into the local gas network. The hydrogen generated by this initiative will be loaded onto BOC tube trailers and delivered to Transit Systems for use in the new buses, providing emissions-free transportation.

Speaking about the project, Michael McGee, CEO of Transit Systems said: “These hydrogen buses will utilise hydrogen that has been proudly produced at the Tonsley Innovation District,”

“This trial will exploit innovative local supply chains, gauge the economic benefits of renewable energy, and harness local talent as part of the South Australian Government’s pioneering work to support local industry into a green future.”
