Tata Motors' set to unveil hydrogen-powered trucks by 2025

Tata Motors has launched its hydrogen-powered truck project with IOCL in aims of pushing sustainable transport and infrastructure development.

Indian automotive company Tata Motors has announced its partnership with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), to launch a pilot project featuring hydrogen internal combustion engine (HICE) trucks starting in Q2 2025.

This 18-month project, a key part of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, aims to collect crucial data for the lorries and hydrogen refuelling infrastructure to facilitate improvements.

According to Tata Motors, the hydrogen-powered trucks will operate on three routes for 18 months which include Mumbai-Pune, Jamshedpur-Kalinganagar and Mumbai-Ahmedabad.

This initiative will help refine the technology behind hydrogen internal combustion engines and contribute to developing infrastructure for hydrogen refuelling across these regions.

At the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, Tata Motors showcased a truck powered by a hydrogen internal combustion engine, signalling the company’s commitment to advancing
hydrogen-based technologies.

Tata Motors Executive Director Girish Wagh highlighted that the company is preparing for both hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles, with a dual focus on developing both technologies for “future commercial use”.

Strengthening their relationship, the company has also been running 15 electric fuel cell buses in collaboration with IOCL for over 10 months.

The project aligns with goals set by the Indian Government, which hav been encouraging the shift towards sustainable transportation through initiatives like FAME incentives and Production-Linked Incentives (PLIs).

Wagh added that the commercial vehicle market has “faced ups and downs in the current fiscal year, but the company is seeing positive signs in all the end-use segments”.
