Steps Towards a New Era of Emission-free Public Transportation in the Leh Region.
Amara Raja Infra is a flagship company of the $2 billion Amara Raja Group. They specialise in providing end-to-end solutions in infrastructure development with a focus on power, renewable energy and sustainability.
They have successfully commissioned India’s first green hydrogen fuelling station in Leh, Ladakh, for NTPC Limited. This is a monumental achievement and a significant milestone in India’s journey towards sustainable and clean energy solutions.
The fuel station is located at an altitude of 3,400 meters in challenging conditions where temperatures fluctuate between -25°C to 30°C. This state-of-the-art hydrogen fuelling station is a testament to India’s commitment to combating climate change and promoting renewable energy adoption. The facility has a production capacity of 80 kilograms of green hydrogen per day, which will power over five hydrogen fuel cell buses operating in and around Leh.
Project Scope and Execution
Amara Raja Infra undertook the entire project, a few main elements to discuss would be about,
- Incorporating cutting-edge technology and adhering to the highest safety standards.
- Building the facility under extreme environmental conditions.
- Ensuring the facility meets stringent quality benchmarks.
- Offering three years of post-commissioning support to ensure smooth and reliable operations.
Speaking about the achievement, Dwarakanadha Reddy, Business Head (Power EPC) at Amara Raja Infra, said, “The successful commissioning of India’s first green hydrogen fuelling station demonstrates our expertise in EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) and reinforces our commitment to advancing sustainable energy infrastructure. We are proud to be at the forefront of India’s green hydrogen revolution.”
Alignment with India’s Hydrogen Energy Mission
This project is a key step in realising the goals of India’s National Hydrogen Energy Mission aiming to position India as a global hub for green hydrogen production and utilisation. By establishing this fuelling station, Amara Raja Infra has laid the foundation for future green hydrogen mobility and storage projects across India.
Promoting Green Transportation
The hydrogen fuelling station will directly support NTPC’s efforts to deploy hydrogen-powered vehicles in Ladakh. Hydrogen fuel cell buses will offer a cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable alternative to conventional fossil fuel-based transport, reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in the ecologically sensitive region.
Future Implications
This project will catalyse the adoption of green hydrogen technologies across the country, creating new opportunities for innovation, investment, and job creation in the renewable energy sector. It underscores Amara Raja Infra’s commitment to delivering innovative solutions that contribute to a greener and sustainable future.
The company has a proven track record of executing complex projects with a commitment to excellence and environmental stewardship.
