Jon Maddy
Director - Hydrogen Research Centre, USW

Jon Maddy is the Director of the University of South Wales’ Hydrogen Research Centre in Port Talbot, where he leads the University’s industry facing Research and Innovation activities on hydrogen. Specific areas of investigation are electrolytic hydrogen production, hydrogen recovery and purification, hydrogen energy storage, thermochemical hydrogen production, hydrogen for transport and fuel cell applications, hydrogen safety as well as hydrogen as a decarbonisation mechanism for industry and heating.

With industrial partners, Jon co-founded the South Wales Industrial Cluster, with a shared mission to achieve net zero emission industry in South Wales by 2040, whilst maintaining commercial competitiveness and growing investment in the region. Jon is the Academic Lead for the Cluster and is also an Associate Board Member of Net Zero Industry Wales. He has held a series of advisory roles to the UK and Welsh Governments on hydrogen and related technologies.

Prior to joining the University, Jon had nearly two decades of experience in the industrial gases industry with a particular emphasis on all aspects of industrial hydrogen, including plant design, operation, safety, business management and strategy development. This experience supports the mission of the USW Hydrogen R&D Centre to focus on mid- to later TRL hydrogen and fuel cell R&D, with a strong emphasis on collaboration with industry and government as well as other academic partners.
