The plant in Boden, northeast Sweden, is set to be the world’s first commercial-scale green steel factory in operation when it opens in 2025. It will also make H2 Green Steel one of the largest green hydrogen producers in Europe.
H2 Green Steel will use green hydrogen and then use renewable-powered electric arc furnaces to turn iron into steel in an entirely carbon-free process.
It is aiming to produce 2.5 million tonnes of steel annually in Boden by the end of 2025. Following this it aims to ramp this up to five million tonnes by 2030.
Currently, the firm is in the process of converting offtake announces to binding long-term agreements, signing three supply contracts worth more than €2 billion in early May and late April. This includes a €1.79 billion deal with Marcegaglia; an Italian steel group.
