Mitsubishi Power Completes Groundbreaking Hydrogen Fuel Conversion Project in Egypt

Pioneering hydrogen fuel use in industrial boilers marks a major step in Egypt’s clean energy transition

Mitsubishi Power has successfully completed a landmark hydrogen fuel conversion project at the Alexandria National Refining and Petrochemicals Company (ANRPC) refinery, delivering the first industrial-scale application of hydrogen as a fuel in an industrial boiler in Egypt and the wider MENA region.

Awarded in 2022, the project involved upgrading ANRPC’s main boiler — with a capacity of 100 tonnes per hour — converting it from heavy fuel oil and natural gas to run entirely on 100% hydrogen fuel. This innovative conversion not only supports Egypt’s commitment to decarbonisation but also enables the refinery to utilise 14,000 tonnes per year of hydrogen-rich gases generated on-site, reducing natural gas consumption by approximately 24,000 tonnes annually.

Javier Cavada, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Power Europe, Middle East and Africa, commented:
“This project sets a commercial precedent for decarbonising Egypt’s industrial facilities with minimal operational downtime. It clearly demonstrates hydrogen’s transformative role in cutting emissions and advancing sustainable energy solutions.”

In a recent LinkedIn statement, Cavada added:
“A first for Egypt, a first for the world — a bold and ambitious step towards accelerating the energy transition. Our partner ANRPC Petroleum is now producing energy with 40% less consumption and reducing carbon emissions by around 65,000 tonnes per year. This is the power of technology, engineering, and innovation.”

Sayed Al-Rawi, Chairman and Managing Director of ANRPC, said:
“Integrating hydrogen into our refining process is a key part of reducing Egypt’s carbon footprint and setting new industrial standards. Our collaboration with Mitsubishi Power exemplifies how international partnerships and cutting-edge technology can drive meaningful progress towards a sustainable energy future.”

Key Highlights:

  • First industrial boiler in Egypt and MENA to operate on 100% hydrogen fuel
  • Reduction of natural gas consumption by ~24,000 tonnes per year
  • Utilisation of 14,000 tonnes per year of hydrogen-rich gases onsite
  • Estimated annual carbon emission reduction of approximately 65,000 tonnes
  • Supports Egypt’s industrial decarbonisation and clean energy ambitions

This pioneering hydrogen fuel conversion project underscores Mitsubishi Power’s leadership in hydrogen energy and its commitment to supporting the MENA region’s clean energy goals. The initiative aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable industrial practices.
