Mauritania Highlights Crucial Role of Green Hydrogen in Europe

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, paid a joint visit to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, where they discussed the development of green hydrogen, among other issues, with its President, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.

The visit included a business meeting that brought together high-level European players, led by Hydrogen Europe – the main organisation representing companies and stakeholders based in Europe that are committed to moving towards a carbon neutral economy – and was attended by Antón Martínez, CEO of Enagás Renovable.

Antón actively participated in a round table moderated by Jorgo Chatzimarkakis

Antón actively participated in a round table moderated by Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, CEO of Hydrogen Europe, in which, together with representatives of leading companies such as Total Eren H2, Soladvent, Eurofer, Smartenergy, Capital Energy and Acciona & Nordex Green Hydrogen, the European added value for the development of the green hydrogen sector in Mauritania was highlighted.

During the meeting, participants also emphasised the important role of green hydrogen in creating sustainable jobs in Mauritania, as well as its potential to boost economic growth and the transition to cleaner and renewable energy sources.

President von der Leyen positive about the future

President von der Leyen said: “We in the European Union want to produce 10 million tones of green hydrogen by 2030, but we also know that we have to import another 10 million tones of green hydrogen by 2030. So we have to work very hard domestically, but we also need partners abroad”. This underlines the important role of partners like Mauritania for Europe, articulated through initiatives such as Team Europe and the Global Gateway project.

This meeting underlines Europe’s commitment to the global expansion of green hydrogen as a sustainable and promising energy solution. The collaboration between Europe and Mauritania in this field promises to open new opportunities for economic development and climate change mitigation in both regions.
