Major Project Status Granted to the Darwin H2 Hub

The Northern Territory government in Australia has granted major project status to the Darwin H2 Hub, a 1GW green hydrogen initiative by TE H2, 80%-owned by French oil major TotalEnergies. 

This move aims to expedite approvals, recognizing the project’s significance in the region’s economic development. 

The government will outline necessary approvals, assign a dedicated case manager, and provide access to investment opportunities, such as overseas trade missions. 

Similar commitments have been extended to Fortescue’s undisclosed green hydrogen and ammonia project, as well as Tamboran Resources for a contentious gas liquefaction and export facility. Although specific hydrogen production targets haven’t been defined, the territory’s master plan envisions exports to Asia, including Japan, South Korea, China, and Germany. 

Eva Lawler, the territory’s chief minister, emphasized the TE H2 project as a pivotal step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, leveraging abundant solar resources and strategic location for Indo-Pacific exports in meeting global green energy demand.

“The TE H2 project is an example of how this Government sources new clean energy projects that will significantly contribute to the Territory’s drive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Eva Lawler, the territory’s chief minister.

“With our abundant solar resources and our strategic location to support exports into the Indo-Pacific, the production of green hydrogen is a key opportunity for the Territory to address the growing demand for this green energy globally,” she added.
