LONGi Hydrogen Ships Alkaline Electrolysers for Uzbekistan’s Green Ammonia Project
Green hydrogen from electrolysers powers ammonia production, advancing Central Asia’s clean energy ambitions and cutting carbon emissions.
LONGi Hydrogen, a leading Chinese manufacturer of electrolysers, has marked a significant milestone in its global expansion by shipping four alkaline electrolysers to Uzbekistan. These units will be installed at ACWA Power’s 3,000-tonne green ammonia pilot project, a key development in the production of green hydrogen for ammonia synthesis. The project represents LONGi’s first venture in Central Asia, highlighting its growing international footprint.
The shipment comprises four 1,000 Nm³/h (~5 MW) medium-pressure alkaline electrolysers integral to ACWA Power’s green ammonia initiative. The Uzbekistan project will utilise green hydrogen produced from these electrolysers as a feedstock for ammonia production supporting the region’s ambitions for cleaner energy and reduced carbon emissions.
This project is ACWA Power’s second major green hydrogen initiative, following the much-publicised 2.2 GW NEOM project in Saudi Arabia. Construction on the Uzbek plant has commenced and the project is a stepping stone towards wider adoption of green hydrogen technologies in the region.
Technological Significance:
LONGi Hydrogen launched its new generation of alkaline electrolysers in 2023, positioning itself as a leader in the sector. The installation of these units at ACWA Power’s facility will not only serve as a showcase for their technological capabilities but also demonstrate LONGi’s comprehensive operations and maintenance services. The company’s medium-pressure alkaline electrolysers are designed for efficient and reliable performance, aligning with the industry’s growing focus on sustainable and scalable solutions for hydrogen production.
Jun Ma, President of LONGi Hydrogen, stated, “This is the first project in Central Asia for LONGi Hydrogen, which is a significant milestone for global development. We are thrilled to receive recognition from the global partners for our technologies and capabilities. LONGi Hydrogen is dedicated to providing safe and reliable products to accompany our customers for global project development.”
A Milestone for Central Asia:
The green ammonia project in Uzbekistan is a landmark for both ACWA Power and LONGi Hydrogen. For ACWA Power, it marks the second large-scale green hydrogen project after their pioneering 2.2GW NEOM project, reinforcing their commitment to expanding their green energy portfolio. For LONGi, it signifies a vital expansion into the Central Asian market, reflecting the growing global demand for green hydrogen solutions.
The success of this project could pave the way for further collaborations and projects across the region, demonstrating the feasibility and scalability of green hydrogen for ammonia production. As nations worldwide seek cleaner alternatives to conventional fossil fuels, projects like these play a crucial role in driving the transition to sustainable energy.
LONGi Hydrogen’s involvement in ACWA Power’s green ammonia project in Uzbekistan represents a major achievement in the company’s global strategy. With the deployment of its advanced alkaline electrolysers, LONGi aims to prove its technological prowess and establish a stronger presence in emerging markets. The project not only underscores the importance of green hydrogen in the transition to renewable energy but also marks a significant step towards sustainable industrial practices in Central Asia.
