Hygenco Partners with Topsoe for Green Ammonia Project in India
Hygenco has chosen Danish technology provider Topsoe as the licensor for its ammonia synthesis technology to convert green hydrogen into ammonia for export.
The ambitious 1.1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) green ammonia project is set to be developed at Tata Steel’s Special Economic Zone Industrial Park in Gopalpur, Odisha.
The plant will be built in three phases and use Topsoe’s cutting-edge DynAMMO™ technology, along with engineering design hardware and catalysts.
The first phase, expected to be operational by 2027, will have a production capacity of 750 tonnes of green ammonia per day.
Topsoe’s ammonia technology is specifically designed to handle fluctuations in renewable energy supply, with the ability to ramp production up or down at a rate of at least 3% per minute, making it highly adaptable to the intermittent nature of renewable energy.
Focus on global green energy goals
Hygenco’s green ammonia will primarily be exported to European markets, adhering to the EU’s stringent Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) regulations.
The project is a significant step towards decarbonisation at scale, contributing to global sustainability goals.
Renewable energy backbone
To ensure a steady supply of green power, Hygenco launched a 1.1GW renewable energy tender in October.
This tender aims to secure the necessary solar and wind energy to support the plant’s operations and meet its renewable energy requirements.
Voices from leadership
Amit Bansal, Co-Founder and CEO of Hygenco expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership: “We are excited to leverage the cutting-edge technology of a global leader like Topsoe to scale up green ammonia production effectively.”
Elena Scaltritti, Chief Commercial Officer at Topsoe, highlighted the significance of the project: “On a global level, we need to deploy decarbonisation at scale, and Hygenco’s project will be able to deliver a solid contribution.”
Impact and future prospects
This project reinforces India’s growing position as a global hub for green hydrogen and ammonia production.
By exporting green ammonia to Europe, Hygenco aims to not only meet international demand but also support India’s renewable energy transition.
With advanced technology from Topsoe, the facility is poised to be a key player in the global green ammonia market.
By combining advanced ammonia technology with robust renewable energy sourcing, the project demonstrates the potential of large-scale decarbonisation while catering to global green energy demands.
