How Will Solar Power provide Energy for Green Hydrogen in Warmer Countries?
As more oil giants commit to a hydrogen future, HIL discusses what hydrogen projects are developing in Spain.
Oil supermajor BP, Spanish renewables giant Iberdrola and gas grid operator Enagas have reached an agreement to study the use of solar power to produce green hydrogen. Are big oil companies finally looking at ways to become greener?
The electrolyser will have an initial capacity of 20MW, which could eventually be boosted to a huge 115MW. This would make it the largest green hydrogen project in Spain.
As it currently stands, grey hydrogen is being produced from fossil fuel sources at BPs refinery. Switching to green hydrogen could save up to 24,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
A first 20MW electrolyser could be operational in 2023, at a cost of about €90m. The renewable energy plants would need an investment of another €70m in the future
