Four German Municipal Utilities Agree to Develop a 50 MW Electrolyser
A North Rhine-Westphalian consortium consisting of EMERGY, Gelsenwasser, Stadtwerke Münster and Trianel intends to develop an electrolyser in the Coesfeld area. The managing directors of the future project partners signed a memorandum of understanding on August 20, 2024.
In a joint feasibility study, they’ll investigate a pioneering hydrogen project for the Münsterland region. An electrolyser with an output of around 50 MW is planned, generating hydrogen from predominantly regionally generated green electricity. It will then be fed into the hydrogen core network. The “GreenLink Münsterland” project is scheduled to be implemented by 2028.

“The GreenLink Münsterland project offers the opportunity to make the energy transition a success in a region with a lot of renewable energy and proximity to the emerging hydrogen core network,” explains Ron Keßeler, Managing Director of EMERGY Führung- und Service Gesellschaft mbH. “The Coesfeld location offers good conditions for this.”
The letter of intent regulates the cooperation between the project partners in the pre-project development phase. Each company contributes valuable skills that will be used in the various development steps. “With this project, we will gain important first-hand experience in the field of hydrogen and further build up our knowledge and expertise,” explains Sebastian Jurczyk, Managing Director of Stadtwerke Münster GmbH. “We can bring our know-how in the context of grid transformation into the project.”
Path of green hydrogen for climate neutrality in Germany
“We want to signal that we are also pursuing the path of green hydrogen for climate neutrality in Germany. We want to play an active role in shaping production. Now it is a matter of working out the concrete challenges in realising the electrolyser and feeding it into the hydrogen core network.” said Dr Dirk Waider of Gelsenwasser AG.
The feasibility study will be pushed forward in the next few months, including identifying suitable locations and evaluating possible funding options. “GreenLink Münsterland is already the second hydrogen project that Trianel is driving forward,” says Sven Becker, spokesman for the management of Trianel GmbH.
“With the Hamm hydrogen centre, we have already gained valuable experience from which the project in Münsterland can now benefit. Our declared goal is to bring hydrogen to the area. We can best achieve this in cooperation with local municipal companies. We look forward to taking another step towards a decarbonised world with our partners.”
