Estonia’s Hydrogen Leadership Shines With 250,000 Tonne Goal

Although a small country, Estonia is emerging as a force within the European hydrogen industry. Its location qualifies it as ‘Eastern European’, however, it is only 60km away from Finland, meaning it has great links with the northern, Scandinavian countries.

The country aims to produce 250,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually. An ambitious target – but one which ‘Stargate Hydrogen’ are at the forefront of realising.

Tallinn-based company, ‘Stargate Hydrogen’ is a leader in the Estonian hydrogen industry, developing innovative technologies and making strategic partnerships. Collaborating with Finland, Estonia is bolstering the Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor.

Recently, Stargate Hydrogen expanded globally by partnering with India’s BGR Tech, marking a significant step in international hydrogen collaboration.

Stargate Hydrogen enters the Hydrogen Indian market

Stargate Hydrogen, a manufacturing company of alkaline electrolyser systems for green hydrogen production, has (05/08/24) announced its cooperation and first purchase order with BGR Tech Limited, a leading engineering company based in Chennai, India.

This marks Stargate Hydrogen’s entry into the hydrogen Indian market, the world’s third-largest economy with a projected 35% energy demand increase by 2030.

The hydrogen Indian market presents a vast opportunity for green hydrogen production due to its size, government support through initiatives like National Green Hydrogen Mission and PLI scheme for green hydrogen production and electrolyser manufacturing.

With plans to establish significant electrolyser facilities, India is poised to be a major player in the transition to clean energy. The cooperation with BGR Tech underscores Stargate Hydrogen’s commitment to supporting this transition in the hydrogen Indian market.

Marko Virkebau, CEO of Stargate Hydrogen:

“We are thrilled to partner with BGR Tech and to take this significant step into the Indian market.

This collaboration is a testament to our commitment to delivering quality products, combining Stargate’s high-quality stacks with BGR Tech’s exceptional system engineering capabilities. T

ogether, we are dedicated to providing an efficient, reliable, and competitive hydrogen production system tailored for Indian projects.

India’s commitment to clean energy aligns perfectly with our mission to advance cost-competitive green hydrogen production and foster sustainable energy solutions worldwide.”

The Founder and Managing Director of BGR Tech Ltd Ms. Priyadershini Raghupathy also had a positive message on the collaboration,

“We are looking forward to integrating Stargate’s advanced electrolyser stacks with our in-house developed Balance of Plant. We are keen to execute Alkaline Water Electrolyser based Hydrogen Production Projects in INDIA. BGR TECH’s Manufacturing Facility at Chennai is capable to Design and Manufacture end to end equipment’s of Hydrogen value chain,” said BGR Tech’s MD.

“This cooperation will enhance our capabilities in delivering clean energy solutions and support our ongoing efforts in decarbonizing the industries. Together, we are taking a significant step towards a sustainable future.”

Stargate pair with Fortum for hydrogen production in Finland.

Finnish energy company, ‘Fortum’ is currently building a hydrogen production plant in Loviisa, 90km east of Finland’s capital, Helsinki.  The plant will be equipped with Stargate’s novel electrolyser and will be located near Fortum’s Loviisa nuclear power plant, at Kalla test center. The plant is scheduled to be commissioned in late 2025.

At the plant, hydrogen will be produced via Stargate’s novel alkaline electrolyser system: ‘Gateway200’. With a capacity of 1MW, the system will utilise electricity from the main grid and the household water source.

A hydrogen filling station will be built in connection with the plant for delivering the hydrogen to industrial customers. The plant will serve as a blueprint and testing bed for larger projects.

“We are proud to collaborate with Fortum on this exciting project in Loviisa. Our Gateway 1MW alkaline electrolyser system is designed to meet the demands of industrial-scale green hydrogen production and will enable Fortum to harvest the potential of hydrogen. We are also looking forward to supporting Fortum on the next steps of their hydrogen roadmap.”

Overall, Stargate Hydrogen is forging significant partnerships across Europe and beyond, strengthening its position in the hydrogen industry. These alliances highlight Stargate’s commitment to driving innovation and fostering sustainable energy solutions worldwide.
