Egypt’s Abu Qir Signs Green Hydrogen Supply Deal
Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, witnessed the signing of three strategic Green Hydrogen agreements to promote energy efficiency and sustainability.
The agreements. Which were signed on 6 January, are set to develop Abu Qir Fertilizers factories while promoting energy efficiency and sustainability. According to the fertilizer company, the contracts are a step that will enhance the company’s sustainability targets.
Details of the agreements
The first agreement was signed by Abu Qir Chairman Abed Ezz El Regal and Mr. Bjorn Q Aaserod, CEO of MPS American Company. This deal will focus on the supply of green hydrogen with aims to partially replace the natural gas in productive processes.
Implemented by MPS, the first agreement will allow to increase the productivity of the Abu Qir ammonia factory, maintaining compliance with European emission standards.
The second agreement was signed between Ahmed El Sherbiny, Vice President of the ABB Group, and Ibrahim Makki, CEO of MPS American Company.
Lastly, Ahmed Al-Sherbiny, Vice President of the ABB Group and Abed Ezz Al-Rajal, Chairman Abu Qir, signed an agreement to install an advanced automation control system in the Abu Qir Ammonia Factory.
The third agreement holds its significance in its aim to reduce the consumption of natural gas used as fuel. According to Abu Qir, the company aims to reduce natural gas consumption used for steam boilers in the plant by an initial 2% to 4%, while also improving overall operational efficiency.
AFC Strengthens Its Competitiveness
Engineer Abed Ezz El Regal explained, that these projects enhance the company’s leading position in the nitrogen fertilizers industry, by “improving energy use efficiency, reducing emissions, and strengthening the competitiveness of the company’s products in international markets by offering low-carbon products and eliminating carbon taxes in the future”.
El Regal added that these agreements reflect the commitments set up by the Abu Qir Fertilizer Company. This includes adopting the latest global technologies and enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian products in international markets.
