Egyptian Green Hydrogen And Renewable Energy Cluster Achieves MoU

French-headquartered Voltalia and TAQA Arabia recently signed an agreement with the Egyptian Government to develop, finance, and operate hydrogen clusters and renewable power generation.

Initially installing a 100MW electrolyser powered by 282MW of renewable power, the hydrogen production facility, located near Ain Sokhna port in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, will produce around 15000 tonnes of hydrogen per year.

With scalability in mind, Voltalia and TAQA say they intend to expand the project to boast a green hydrogen production capacity of 150,000 tonnes per year with an electrolyser capacity of 1GW, supplied by 2.7GW of solar and wind power. Whether this will be achieved remains to be seen, with no date decided for a FID.

Aligning public and private investments will be the deciding factor in a facility capable of producing hydrogen at this scale. With multiple sign off from four different bodies, the memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by The Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE), the General Authority for Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC).
