Cespira Launches into Hydrogen Market with High-Pressure Direct Injection Technology

A breaking collaboration of Volvo and Westport Fuel Systems delivers advancement to Cespira with HPDI Technology.

Volvo Group and Westport Fuel Systems have officially launched into the hydrogen market under the new name Cespira, signalling a new era for clean fuel innovation in the mobility sector. The venture, backed by Volvo’s 45% interest for approximately $28 million (plus an additional $45 million earn-out), aims to advance the use of high-pressure direct injection (HPDI) fuel systems, with a focus on decarbonising long-haul trucking and off-road applications.

Cespira’s HPDI technology can be seamlessly integrated into existing internal combustion engine (ICE) architectures, offering immediate reductions in CO2 emissions. Currently, it operates with biogas and natural gas, and the company anticipates exciting future possibilities for hydrogen use. CEO of Cespira, Dan Sceli, explained that the new name embodies the company’s mission for clean energy: “The name – combining ‘expire,’ meaning breathe out, with ‘C’ for clean – reflects our ambition to lead the charge in global decarbonisation.”

Sceli highlighted that Cespira’s logo is symbolic of its collaboration with Volvo and Westport, representing the integration of established technology with innovative clean fuel solutions, and the molecular structure of hydrogen, central to their mission. He also underscored the company’s ambition to expand partnerships with multiple OEMs to broaden the impact of the joint venture.

Lars Stenqvist, CTO at Volvo, affirmed the importance of HPDI technology for decarbonisation: “Our HDPI systems enable significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions using existing ICE technology. With Cespira, we’re positioned to lead the way towards a sustainable future, exploring exciting possibilities for hydrogen fuel.”

In addition to its global operations, Cespira is receiving critical support from Volvo’s Indian unit for electrical input assembly, with plans underway for further investment in expanding its footprint in the region. Volvo’s investment in the Indian unit is expected to boost the local supply chain, with plans for assembly and production in line with Volvo’s global sustainability goals.

Cespira, through these advancements, aims to push the boundaries of clean fuel technology, leading the mobility sector towards a more sustainable and decarbonised future.
