Canadian Oil Refinery To Clean Up Operations With Hydrogen

Plug Power has announced it has been awarded a contract which could see it support a Canadian oil company in decarbonising its operations. Hydrogen Industry Leaders looks at how hydrogen could be used to help clean up the refinery’s operations.

The contract will see a 5MW containerised PEM electrolyser delivered to Irving Oil’s Saint John, New Brunswick refinery in Canada.

Initially, it is set to be powered by the local electricity grid, and it is said that the electrolyser will enable the oil company to produce two tonnes of hydrogen per day, set to be used for refining and mobility applications.

Irving Oil intends on using the electrolyser as the start of its transition toward hydrogen production and distribution, with it contributing to its goal of reducing GHG emissions and developing sustainable energy solutions.

It is planned that the electrolyser will be deployed at the refinery in the third quarter of 2023 and Irving Oil’s investment in the electrolyser unit aims to make hydrogen more readily available to regional customers and to contribute to Canada’s hydrogen economy.
