Malaysia to Commence Green Hydrogen Production

Sarawak is set to begin large-scale commercial production of green hydrogen by 2027 as the Malaysian state looks towards reducing their carbon footprint and promoting renewable energy.

Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that the state would work with Korea on the project, and earn revenue from sending Korea the green hydrogen produced.

Sarawak is also working closely with Japan to produce green hydrogen to export to Singapore and Japan, as well as for domestic use.

The Premier said the state’s goal is to become the first hydrogen-driven economy in South-East Asia by accelerating the use of greener hydrogen energy sources.

He added: “Transitioning to a hydrogen-driven economy will bring multiple benefits to our state, including reduced carbon emissions, enhanced energy security and opportunities for economic growth and job creation.

“It’s an ambitious goal, but with determination, proper planning and cooperation from the government, businesses and the public, Sarawak can pave the way for sustainable development in South-East Asia.”

Also helping to meet this goal is the hydrogen-powered autonomous rapid transit (ART) system. The trackless, rubber-tyred trams that run on tarmac, are expected to start commercial operations in Kuching by the end of 2025.

As well as reducing carbon emissions, the trams will also address traffic congestion between Kuching and Kota Samarahan.
