ScottishPower Renewables Takes Full Control of Ground-Breaking MarramWind Project

Major milestone as ScottishPower Renewables strengthens commitment to Scotland’s offshore wind future
ScottishPower Renewables has taken full ownership of the MarramWind floating offshore wind farm, marking a major step forward for one of Scotland’s most exciting renewable energy projects.
The move follows an agreement with former joint venture partner Shell, and the approval of Crown Estate Scotland, giving ScottishPower Renewables complete control of the site located around 75 kilometres off the north-east coast of Aberdeenshire.
With a planned capacity of up to 3 gigawatts (GW), MarramWind has the potential to become one of the world’s first commercial-scale floating offshore wind farms – capable of generating enough clean, green electricity to power more than 3.5 million homes across the UK.
This landmark project represents a huge step towards achieving Scotland’s and the UK’s net-zero energy goals, harnessing the country’s strong offshore winds to deliver reliable, renewable power while supporting jobs and investment in local communities.
A ScottishPower Renewables spokesperson said:
“Taking full control of MarramWind marks an exciting new chapter for ScottishPower Renewables. Together with our nearby MachairWind project, we’re building a strong foundation for Scotland’s clean-energy future.
“We’ll continue to work closely with local communities, businesses and stakeholders to ensure these projects bring long-term benefits – from green jobs and skills to investment in local supply chains.”
The company, part of the global Iberdrola Group, is already a leading force in the UK’s offshore wind revolution, with major developments such as East Anglia ONE, TWO and THREE. MarramWind will further cement its position as a key player in the transition to sustainable, low-carbon energy.
The transfer also sees Shell take full ownership of the CampionWind project, allowing both companies to focus on delivering their respective offshore wind ambitions across Scottish waters.
As preparations for detailed design, environmental studies and community engagement continue, MarramWind is set to play a pivotal role in driving Scotland’s green-energy leadership on the world stage.
