Baden-Württemberg has initiated a €100m funding programme to support local hydrogen production projects.
Baden-Württemberg, a southwest German state, has announced a €100 million funding programme designed to support the development of hydrogen production projects within the region whilst boosting the local hydrogen economy.
According to the state, electrolyser-based projects are eligible to apply for funding until 15 May 2025, with projects having the possibility of receiving up to €10 million ($10.5 million) in funding.
According to the Baden-Württemberg Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Energy Sector the programme is promoting the “construction of local electrolysers with integrated concepts for the production of renewable hydrogen for regional supply”.
Supporting aims of creating a “nationwide supply of hydrogen” the announcement follows the countries’ broader commitment to advancing the transition to clean energy and enhancing its role in Europe’s growing hydrogen sector.
Thekla Walker, Baden-Württemberg Energy Minister highlighted the importance of localised hydrogen infrastructure.
Walker said: “It is important that we do not only rely on the planned large hydrogen networks, but also build local infrastructures in good time. That’s why we are investing in new generation capacities on site.”
Following a statewide survey conducted in 2023, the ministry were able to assess previous needs, claiming that a “higher and faster growing demand” has been made evident.
With hydrogen seen as a key pillar of the regions energy transition, the programme seeks to stimulate innovation in both green hydrogen production technologies and infrastructure.
