Collaboration to Develop Hydrogen and Ammonia-Fired Power Plants

A Memorandum of Understanding between Hygenco Green Energies and Mitsubishi Power will explore the development of green hydrogen and ammonia-fired gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power plants aiming to deliver innovative, sustainable energy solutions.

Hygenco will supply green hydrogen and ammonia for Mitsubishi Power’s GTCC technology under this agreement. Mitsubishi Power will leverage this collaboration to develop and deploy scaled-up, commercially viable green hydrogen and ammonia production assets.

These assets will be operated on a build-own-operate or gas-as-a-service basis, providing flexible and sustainable energy solutions to meet the growing global demand for clean power.

Saito Mitsunori, Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in India, extended support for the collaboration, stating, “This partnership between Hygenco and MHI exemplifies the international cooperation needed to address climate change and promote sustainable growth. JICA is committed to supporting advancements in green hydrogen technology essential for achieving our global decarbonisation goals.”

The collaboration represents the latest Mitsubishi hydrogen venture

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has a strong track record in hydrogen and ammonia projects worldwide, including three feasibility studies on co-firing plants in Indonesia.

This latest collaboration with Hygenco further strengthens MHI’s commitment to advancing hydrogen-firing technologies in power plants and supporting the global transition to cleaner energy.

Amit Bansal, CEO of Hygenco Green Energies, emphasised the significance of the partnership, stating, “By combining our expertise in green hydrogen and ammonia production with Mitsubishi Power’s advanced GTCC technology, we can play a pivotal role in the decarbonisation of power generation.

“This collaboration will help us deliver innovative and scalable solutions that support the global energy transition.”

As released in our previous press release, Hygenco announced its ambitious plans to develop a large-scale green ammonia project at Tata Steel’s Special Economic Zone Industrial Park (GIP) in Odisha, India.

The project will produce over one million tonnes of ammonia each year

This project aims to produce 1.1 million tonnes of green ammonia annually and received approval from the High-Level Clearance Authority of the Chief Minister’s office in early 2024.

The plant’s initial phase will be commissioned by December 2026, marking a significant milestone in India’s green hydrogen and ammonia production capabilities.

Hygenco has secured several binding long-term offtake agreements for green hydrogen in India, including the country’s first megawatt-scale plant for a prominent steel company in Hisar, Haryana.

These projects underscore Hygenco’s leadership in the green hydrogen sector and its commitment to driving sustainable energy solutions across India and beyond.

The collaboration between Hygenco Green Energies and Mitsubishi Power represents a significant step forward in the global effort to decarbonise power generation.

By working together, the two companies deliver advanced green hydrogen and ammonia-fired power plants that will contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
