HDF Energy to Deploy Multi-MW Renewable Hydrogen Plants in the Philippines
Hydrogène de France (HDF Energy) has announced its strategic initiative to deploy multi-megawatt (MMW) renewable hydrogen plants in the Philippines to decarbonise the nation’s power sector and drive sustainable development.
An ambitious plan backed by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Philippine Department of Energy (DoE) and the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA).
Under this MOU, HDF Energy will spearhead R&D in cutting-edge technologies to harness renewable energy sources and locally produce green hydrogen across various applications. A collaboration that will focus on HDF Energy’s innovative Renewstable® multi-MW hydrogen power plants utilising solar or wind energy combined with water to generate electricity, thus offering a sustainable and resilient energy solution.
Mathieu Geze, President and Director of HDF Energy Philippines Holdings Incorporated, emphasised the importance of local and national stakeholder support in realising these projects. He stated, “We are committed to accelerating these projects, and our engagements to partner with Local Government Units (LGUs), Electric Cooperatives, and consultants will demonstrate our dedication to establishing 15 projects in the Philippines, valued at $1.5 billion,”. He further noted that ten of these projects are planned for implementation in Mindanao, underscoring the region’s strategic significance in the country’s energy landscape.
The collaboration with Reurasia, a company committed to promoting sustainable development throughout Southeast Asia, further underscores HDF Energy’s commitment to meeting the ambitious targets set for the Philippines. By leveraging the expertise and resources of both companies, this partnership aims to enhance the country’s renewable energy capabilities and support its transition towards a cleaner energy future.
Raphael Lotilla, Secretary of the DoE, hailed the agreement as a significant milestone in the Philippines’ journey towards energy sustainability and resilience. “It underscores our collective commitment to harnessing the power of hydrogen technologies, as it is a pivotal step in achieving our national energy goals,” Lotilla remarked. This partnership aligns with the country’s broader objectives of reducing carbon emissions, enhancing energy security, and fostering economic growth.
This innovation ensures a reliable supply of clean energy, even when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing, making it an ideal solution for the Philippines’ diverse energy needs.
In addition to the environmental benefits, these renewable hydrogen plants are expected to generate significant economic and employment opportunities. These new jobs stimulate local industries, contributing to the socio-economic development of the regions involved.
As part of its commitment to safety and sustainability, HDF Energy implements stringent safety standards and protocols in the construction and operation of the hydrogen plants ensuring the safe handling, storage, and utilisation of hydrogen, addressing any potential risks associated with its use.
The collaboration between HDF Energy, the DoE, and MinDA denotes a forward-thinking approach to addressing the Philippines’ energy challenges. Hydrogen technology and renewable energy, the country is poised to become a leader in sustainable energy solutions in Southeast Asia.
