Toyota to Showcase Their New Portable Hydrogen Cartridges

Toyota plans to launch a portable hydrogen cartridge at the Japan Mobility Show Bizweek exhibition later this month.

They hope this cartridge will enhance the viability of hydrogen cars and other applications. The Mobility Show aims to foster interaction between the mobility industry and startups to co-create toward a sustainable future.

Despite Toyota’s determination to put hydrogen-powered cars on the road, infrastructure has been the primary challenge. Hydrogen offers superior refueling times and greater range compared to electric powertrains, but sourcing fuel remains an issue.

While the number of EV charging points in the UK has increased, hydrogen filling stations have decreased from ten two years ago to seven now, with two located in Aberdeen.

To address this, Toyota is focusing on reducing the size and weight of hydrogen tanks to make them portable. They envision the portable hydrogen cartridge as a familiar and safe energy source for various everyday uses.

Toyota is collaborating with Rinnai Corporation to integrate these cartridges into cooking equipment, either for generating electricity or direct cooking use. Images on the Toyota website suggest that they anticipate delivering these cartridges to customers with their food.

Toyota’s statement reads: ‘Toyota is working on research and development toward realizing a carbon-neutral society based on a multi-pathway approach with diverse viable energy options. Hydrogen is the ultimate clean energy that emits no CO2 during use, and CO2 emissions can also be minimized during the production process when renewable energy sources such as wind and solar are used. Hydrogen can be used to generate electricity in fuel cell systems and can also be used as a combustion fuel.’
