10 MW Electrolyser From Sunfire to Produce 200 kg of Hydrogen Per Day

Sunfire to deliver 10 MW electrolyser for green hydrogen project in Bilbao

Basque Hydrogen, a consortium led by Spanish companies Petronor (a subsidiary of Repsol) in collaboration with Enagás Renovable (a subsidiary of Enagás) and the Ente Vasco de la Energía (the energy agency of the Basque Government), has chosen German electrolyser manufacturer Sunfire to provide a 10 MW electrolyser for a green hydrogen initiative in Bilbao, Spain.

The 10 MW facility will generate up to 200 kilograms of green hydrogen per hour using electricity sourced from renewables.

Sunfire noted that Repsol plans to utilise this hydrogen to produce e-fuels, which are regarded as potential solutions for decarbonising sectors that are challenging to electrify. The plant is expected to commence operations in 2026.

Hydrogen Excitement Continues to Spread Through Europe

Sunfire’s CEO, Nils Aldag, highlighted Spain’s appeal as a market due to its geographic advantages and industrial expertise.

Aldag stated, “Spain is a very exciting market for us! The country offers strong conditions for green hydrogen projects with its geographic location and industrial expertise.”

Similarly, Repsol’s Hydrogen Director, Maribel Rodriguez Olmo, emphasised Repsol’s commitment to strategic alliances, such as the one with Sunfire, to strengthen Spain’s position in the hydrogen value chain and boost industrial employment.

Olmo commented: “At Repsol, we are committed to forming the best alliances, such as with Sunfire, to attract part of the hydrogen value chain to Spain, not only as a production hub but also to boost industry and industrial employment in the country.”

Bilbao, a critical hub in the Basque Country, is home to numerous hydrogen-focused companies and research centres, underlining its role in Repsol’s decarbonisation strategy.

European Green Hydrogen Corridor

Additionally, the ports of Bilbao and Amsterdam are collaborating to establish a maritime route linking the Basque Hydrogen Corridor with the Noord-Holland Hydrogen Hub.

This project emphasises the production and trade of renewable hydrogen and synthetic fuels.

The collaboration aims to build a supply chain for renewable hydrogen and synthetic fuels, prioritising production in the Basque Country and export to the Netherlands and Europe via the Port of Amsterdam.

As a part of the Basque Hydrogen Corridor, spearheaded by Petronor and EVE, the Port of Bilbao plays a key role in decarbonising energy, industrial, residential, and mobility sectors.

This initiative aligns with the Basque Hydrogen Strategy driven by EVE, targeting both local and international markets and the Dutch government’s push for green hydrogen adoption.

Connecting Bilbao and Amsterdam will link two thriving hydrogen ecosystems, enabling not only trade but also knowledge exchange.

Both parties continue to plan the next steps, aiming to strengthen Dutch-Spanish ties and contribute to global emission reductions.
